    Disposition:
  • Loyal: I cannot overstate how important loyalty is to Arthur, it's - in his own words - the only thing he ever believed in. He holds a grudge against John for years despite having known the man for fourteen years because he feels like his temporary leaving was a betrayal and it wasn't properly treated as such. More than once he has thrown away good things and opportunities for a Better Life, (a woman who loved him, the chance to raise a child,) because of his loyalty to the gang. For all the terrible things he's done and can do, even a LH Arthur is deeply, deeply loyal to the point that it makes him blind to some of the worst parts of Dutch until his encroaching death forces him to take a new perspective.

  • Angry & Violent: Arthur's always been quick to violence, and it's something that was nurtured and used by Dutch, building him up into the gang's main enforcer. It's something he struggles with, doesn't particularly like it about himself, but reluctantly accepts because in their life the usefulness of the way he is is far too high to not be that man. There's a decent few times he just barely manages to keep his temper in check enough to stop himself making a cataclysmic error — meeting the Pinkertons who've been tracking them is a big one, he just barely manages not to pull his gun on them — simply because his age and experience have taught him what happens if he can't keep a lid on it, not because he's gotten any less full of rage.

  • Curious: For all the ways that he can come across like a brute who doesn't give a care, he's a deeply thoughtful and introspective man. When he finds strange things out in the world, he notes them down in his journal with questions about what they were for or the people who used/made them. He listens to people and their experiences of the world — i.e. Lenny's experiences with racism, the way Sister Calderon relates to her faith — with genuine respect and interest in what they have to say. The ways he gets a little excited and almost childlike every now and then when presented with something new and exciting.

  • Sarcastic: Does this warrant a whole bullet point? Well, the man is almost terminally incapable of shutting his mouth. If he has an opinion on the ways in which someone else is a fool, it's coming out. Usually with a heavy dose of mockery and sarcasm.

  • Sentimental: This man has never let a thing go in his life, both the good and the bad. It's most obvious with John; he left the gang for a year, but it's been three or four years since he came back and Arthur still treats him like shit for it. It shows in other places, the way he never moved on even a little from his ex even though it's been at least ten years, part of his camp setup include photos of his parents (even his piece of shit dad, despite Arthur's feelings on the man's death being "it weren't soon enough,") and a jar with his mother's favourite flower. For 22 years he's worn his father's hat. Leaving the past in the past is a struggle, and one Arthur frequently loses at that.

  • Self-denigrating: This man absolutely goddamn hates himself, and how! He talks down to himself in the mirror, insulting his appearance and commenting "no wonder they all leave you," and his journal features much of the same. He envies Charles for his good nature and hates himself for how easily he gives in to his anger. Calls himself stupid time and time again. When someone calls him a good man he just about laughs it off, even when he literally just saved their life for no apparent reason.

  • I couldn't think of a header for this, but ultimately, he's a man at odds with himself. Mary says of him "There is a good man within you Arthur, but he is wrestling with a giant," and it shows in all these glimpses from the way he talks to/about himself, to the fact that he'll give a woman a ride several miles out of his way because her horse died. He'll kill and steal with little care, but also help an idiot photographer who keeps getting himself in Situations. On his way to his death Arthur makes his attempts to leave things just a little better than they were before — cancelling peoples' debts to the gang, helping John and his family escape, etc. — but that part of him was always there trying its best to get out.

  • Suitability:
Noctium's gonna be a bit of an adjustment, I won't lie. He's from 1899 on a mundane Earth and the closest to anything Weird he's encountered is a ghost in the bayou, so 'shock to the system' is a bit of an understatement. Once he finds a space to decompress and understands he's not being imprisoned or anything similar, he'll likely approach the world with a hefty amount of curiosity, exploring and seeing what he can understand and the like — it's all so new and unlike anything he's ever imagined. Synchrony is going to be a struggle for him, finding that with anyone will probably be tough to begin with as he's fairly guarded in a lot of ways, but he's also not impossible to get close to either. Again, it's something that rests mostly on his ability to not feel boxed in or like this is some sort of weird trick, which shouldn't take too long to push through.

Condition upon arrival: Bad. He might not be sick anymore (dying counts as a cure, right,) but Arthur is extremely underweight from the rapid progression of his tuberculosis, so he's gonna have to spend some time on that. He also was in a shootout followed by a fistfight (almost) to the death (which included a couple storey's fall off a cliff) so he's in almost as bad a state as one can be.

    Abilities:
  • Quick Learner: Arthur's a very fast learner when it comes to things he can actually physically do. He might get a bit lost having things explained to him, but he's shown to pick up most skills within a couple of tries otherwise.

  • Hunter & Tracker: Might not be the best in the gang (he probably ranks about #3 after Charles and Javier,) but he is extremely adept at tracking both humans and animals over long distances. He's come a long way since the days of shooting rabbits with shotguns, and can pretty efficiently judge the best weapons for hunting particular animals and can skin and butcher them well too.

  • Quick Thinker: This is one of the areas where it's most obvious that he's smarter than he gives himself credit for, Arthur is quick on his feet and able to form plans on a dime. It's well known and commented on a few times that he has a habit of taking over the lead on other peoples' jobs if he feels like it's not being handled right, but even when he's not lead, people will often ask for his opinion on how to proceed. When things go wrong, he's incredibly able to assess the situation and make a plan to either finish the job or get them out of there as safe as possible.

  • Actor: Hilariously Arthur isn't much of a liar, but he was near enough raised by a pair of conmen and it shows in the way he can switch on a convincing act on the fly.

  • Alarmingly Strong: There's nothing supernatural to him, but Arthur is freakishly strong and I'm really not understating that. In a brawl, he beats the shit out of a man twice his size after being thrown through a window. After being shot in the shoulder, he breaks a man's neck one-armed. The injured arm, that is. Ill enough that strangers comment on how feeble he looks, he still wins that fight. Even when literally on death's door, Micah still couldn't beat him in a fistfight. It's not just that he's strong, but almost like the limits normal people have for their own good just don't exist for him.

  • Dead Eye: Dead Eye is effectively the game's mechanic to show exactly how terrifying Arthur, John, and Jack are with a gun, (or bow, or a projectile,) in their hands. Effectively a type of hyperfocus that results in such freakish outcomes as hitting 5 headshots firing from the hip in the blink of an eye.

  • Sharpshooter: Further to that, he's an outstanding marksman in general, overwhelmingly the one who'll be trusted with longarms in any given situation where covering fire is needed.

  • He's also the one they tend to rely on to crack a safe, and I don't know if that counts as an ability given he's from 1899, but I think it's cool.
